Care For Your Chef Knives
When you are young it is often difficult to work out what you want to be when you grow up. There is always so much pressure to do well at school then go on and get a degree. But more often than not the decisions you made when you were younger about your future seem a little strange when you come out of the other side of the education system. This is no real surprise because as we grow and develop the world opens up more and more to us and we see a very different path for us from the one we thought we should take at 16.
This, of course, doesn't necessarily apply to everybody; many people know their vocation from a young age and go onto pursue a career in their chosen passion. One of which might be cooking. Training to be a chef is a long and difficult process and requires dedication and a natural flair for creativity and of course attention to detail. It can also be a wonderful career to get into.
It is important that you bear in mind that once you have completed your training you will have to work extremely hard in order to be the best and if this isn't a challenge that excites you and drives you forward then it might be worth having a rethink before you make any form of commitment. If, on the other hand, you are chomping at the bit then good for you and it's time to focus that energy into your training.
Part of this training will involve some knife work. This is where you will learn the importance of having a good quality set of chef knives in your possession, as there are many techniques that must be learnt before you can progress to the next stage of your training.
It is always a good idea to become familiar with your tools. This is the case in all jobs, but even more acute in this industry as you will be using your chef knives for a large number of your daily tasks. So why are the chef knives that you have in front of you so important? Well, this set of chef knives (if good quality) should keep you going for many years as long as you take good care of them. There are some simple things that you will need to do on a regular basis in order to ensure that your set of chef knives is always ready to be used.
Clean the chef knives when appropriate and always dry thoroughly. Do not leave the knives where they can be knocked by other cutlery or utensils, as this can blunt them. Sharpen the blades of your chef knives once or twice a week or more depending on your level of usage, use a whetstone for this. Before you come to use the chef knives you may need to hone the blade using the steel in your kit. All of these simple practices will ensure that the set of chef knives that you use will stay in good working condition.
