The importance of wearing smart chefs clothing

One of the most important things a chef has to bear in mind whilst he or she is working is their apparel. Depending on the eatery in which they work, they may have to wear clothing that features the logo of the company they work for, but also they may need to wear colours that match the rest of the staff and decor. With this in mind, it is possible to buy several items of clothing that fit all the requirements whilst ensuring the clothing is easy to clean and take off in a hurry if necessary.

One of the most important items a chef can wear is the chefs jacket - these are available in both long and short sleeved styles and in a variety of colours. Black and white seem to be the most popular, as these look both smart and professional, but colours such as pink are also easy to get hold of. A chefs jacket should have be easy to remove - press studs or loose ties down the front allow them to be taken off easily, and a logo can be added to the garment if this is required.

It is possible to buy unisex chefs jackets; those tailored for women taper slightly at the hips and waist to give a more feminine cut to the cloth. Depending on the style of restaurant, the chefs jacket may be cut to match traditional styles - Chinese working clothes, for example, are slightly different to those of other cuisines.

Many well known manufacturers in the world of catering equipment make and supply chefs jackets; Metz, Vegas and Volney are just three examples but there are many more to choose from.

To accompany the jacket, professional chefs trousers can be bought that are durable and will allow the wearer to look smart and stylish whilst maintaining comfort and safety in the kitchen. Both unisex and gender specific styles are available with a wide range of designs to choose from. The traditional chequered look is always popular, but plain coloured trousers are also bestsellers, especially in restaurants where a chef may be seen by the public.

Other essential items of chefs clothing includes hats, name tags and aprons - a hat must be worn at all times when working with food to help prevent hair from contaminating peoples' meals. For those with longer hair, a hair net should also be worn alongside the hat to make doubly sure no hair escapes. An apron will help prevent against spillages and keep trousers from becoming stained, which helps the chef to maintain a smart look. If he or she works in a kitchen that members of the public are able to see (which is something a fair few restaurants do nowadays), wearing a name tag will help them to associate faces with names; something most people like to do.
Some chefs also work front of house if needed, for example if they need to fill in as waiters. For this purpose, it may be prudent to keep waiting clothing available for them to use, such as black ties and trousers.
