Glassware is essential in many restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. There are many different types, including stemware, tumblers and pint glasses, ice cream and dessert glasses, coffee glasses and jugs.
Glass stemware includes wine glasses, cocktail glasses, champagne flutes, sherry glasses, brandy glasses and stemmed beer glasses. Red wine glasses have a wide bowl to increase the rate of oxidation. Conversely, champagne flutes have tall, thin bowls to reduce the surface area, retaining the attractive bubbles. Long stems help white wine stay cooler as the drinker can avoid heating up the wine with their hands.
Tumblers have no stem or foot and include pint glasses, highball glasses, juice glasses, water glasses and shot glasses. Pint glasses come in different shapes, including nonic, conical and tulip shapes. These often come in half pint measurements too. Nonic beer glasses have a bulge near the top and are less likely to slip out of the holder’s hand.
Coffee glasses have a handle and flat bases like mugs, but latte glasses and Irish coffee glasses have short stems. Ice cream, sorbet and dessert glasses are usually either decorative glass bowls or tall goblets with short stems.
